History

The Opening

The Good Shepherd Church Communications Centre was officially opened by Rev. Fr. Simon Tang on the 18th December 1988.  It was a project initiated by the Parish Co-ordinating Council, managed by the Young Shepherds.

A protem committee headed by Bro. John Fernandez, with the help of members  from the Young Shepherds and a few parish councillors, took the responsibility of setting up this centre.

After 2 months of intensive work, the centre was successfully opened and the management was then handed over to the new Young Shepherds committee. It was called the Communications Centre with just one area of work - the Library.

The Idea

The idea behind the set up of the Communication Centre was that it would act as a medium of communication to the Parishioners of the Church in spreading the Word of God. The media, being a powerful instrument of progress profoundly affects the way man LIVE and THINK.

Objective

The objective of the centre was to provide a wide range of Christian orientated material such as videotapes, audio cassettes, books, etc, as a medium of christian entertainment for the Parishioners. This is with the aim of helping Parishioners to fully understand what they SEE, HEAR, and READ in their daily lives; in the process build Christian Faith, Unity and Brotherhood among the parishioners.

The Transformation

In 1989, the centre was transformed into a full-fledged Ministry. The management of the Ministry was handed to a Parish Pastoral Council member - the Co-ordinator of the Ministry. This change came about due to the need to provide other types of services that reached out to the Parishioners.

With the transformation, 5 new departments were created and they were:

  • Library
  • Graphics
  • Counter
  • Publications
  • Finance
A new department, Research and Development was set up with the objective to create awareness on media through the screening of effective video shows, talks, seminars, etc.
