The
Mourning After
(1995)
 |
The Communications Ministry had a
3-year project commencing in 1993 with the theme ‘Give Feet to
the Gospel’. In 1994, it was ‘Give Wings to the Gospel’.
And then came ‘The Year We Make Contact’ – the theme for 1995. |
It was in one of those meetings
(planning for 1995) that an idea to do something different came about.
Following that, someone suggested that we do a play on the breakdown of
values.
In due time, the idea developed further
and soon, the idea for a massive production on an Archdiocesan level came
into existence.
The
Thought Process |
It
was evident that there was a need to highlight some social issues to youths
in our parish in a way that they would accept and understand. The play
was considered to be one of the mediums that was “youth friendly” and hence
the project. |
The
Goal |
To create awareness
in society especially amongst the youths on the need to uphold values. |
The
Planning |
All were part-timers,
so planning took 6 months to a year. The committee, formed by the youths,
was assisted by BEC Melawati as consultants and collaborators. |
Play
Rehearsals |
Rehearsals ran
for almost 8 months, every Sunday and increased to twice a week nearing
the date of show. |
Promotions |
Intensive promotions
were carried out in almost all churches in Kuala Lumpur for almost 6 weeks,
greatly helped by Bec Melawati. |
Consumerism, abortion, peer
pressure are some of the issues we decided to highlight.
But we certainly never expected to
end up like this:
From
a kindergarten stage to a KBN set-up;
From a minor
group of volunteers to a cast and crew
of 70-plus
(young and not so young);
For all the
long hours and all the late nights;
For all the
sweat and sacrifices;
And it all
began at that meeting many, many months ago....
Attendence for the first 2 nights
was around 60-70% but got better and on the last night – full house. A
cross section of people came to watch. With all members being amateurs
they were impressed with the production. Many congratulated and wished
us well.
As thanksgiving
to the entire cast and crew, they were treated to a party at Paul K’s house.
A great way
to say thanks to all! |
